Veterinary students urged to expand horizon
The Ashanti Regional Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Albert Filson, has admonished veterinary students in Ghana to expand their horizon as they train to nurture the limited knowledge society.
This he said will help society appreciate the fact that ''without animal there is no life''.
He also bemoaned the current inadequate number of veterinarians in the public sector to assist in its operations and the urgent need for more qualified personnel in the various departments of the veterinary service to avert any adversity in the veterinary sector in future.
He made these comments as he addressed the lecturers and students of Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology (KNUST) during the inauguration of its chapter of Ghana Veterinary Students Association.
‘’You are about entering a wonderful profession which people have very limited knowledge about. Expand your horizon because you are coming into a society which has to be nurtured to understand that without an animal there is no life. As it stands, the number of veterinarians currently in the public sector is so low and very qualified personnel are needed in the various departments of the veterinary service’’. He said.
He further calls for collaboration between the veterinary students and other members within the College and Health Sciences to help promote disease control as far as public health is concerned.
Dr. Raphael Folitse, the dean of the KNUST- School of Veterinary Medicine, in his address entreated the newly elected executives of Ghana Veterinary Students Association not only be interested in position and power but work assiduously to maintain a fruitful relationship with its sister medical association, the Medical Students' Association, to give true meaning to “one world, one health, one medicine” initiative which forms the foundation on which the School of Veterinary Medicine is established.
