Vodafone supports GJA Awards with GH¢10,000
Vodafone Ghana has presented a cheque for GHc10,000 to support the sponsorship of the Telecoms Category at this year’s Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards.
According to the telecommunications company, the drive to support the 21st edition of the GJA Awards was in recognition of the appreciation the company had for the contribution of journalists in the country.
This year’s GJA Awards ceremony is slated for August 27, 2016 at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra. It is on the theme: “Media for undisputed and peaceful 2016 elections: The support of civil society.”
Objective
Speaking at a brief ceremony to present the cheque to the GJA in Accra, the Corporate Communications Manager of Vodafone Ghana, Mr Ebenezer Amankwah, said the support was an indication of the company’s commitment to ensure the highest journalistic standards in the country.
He said the Telecoms Category was essential to Vodafone Ghana because it would reward the best report on the telecommunications industry, of which the company is a major player.
Appreciation
The GJA President, Mr Affail Monney, commended Vodafone Ghana for supporting the association, saying, “We depend on players in the industry who appreciate what we do and our contribution to society.”
He said although there were many people who looked at the flaws of the media “and paint all of us with the same accusing brush, on the flip side there are good journalists who are excelling and impacting positively in all dimensions of national life.
“This year’s celebration of excellence in journalism will focus on the upcoming elections and the EC chair will share with us what the commission expects from us to enable it to conduct free and fair elections.”
In a related development, four other organisations — Wilmar Africa Limited, the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the International Cocoa Initiative and Voltic Ghana Limited — also presented cheques for various amounts to the executive of the GJA to support the upcoming awards.
While Voltic Ghana presented a cheque for GH¢10,000 and 75 cartons of bottled water, valued at GH¢2,000, the Ghana Chamber of Mines handed over a cheque for GH¢8,000 to support the winner of the Best Environment Report, with the International Cocoa Initiative and Wilmar Africa presenting undisclosed amounts in support of the Child Protection and Child Labour, and the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) categories.
