Volunteers Ghana undertake humanitarian service in Gonja East

The District Chief Executive for Gonja East in the Northern Region, Mr Mohammed Lukumana, has hailed the humanitarian work of Volunteers Ghana in his district, and described the group’s initiative as “unprecedented in the history of the district.”

The DCE made the remark when he welcomed remark a group of 150 volunteers from 10 universities in Ghana under the auspices of Volunteers Ghana, a non-governmental organisation committed to fostering volunteerism among the Ghanaian youth.

He pledged his support for what he called “the laudable vision of the group,” and described their arrival at Salaga, the capital of the district, as timely and pointing out that the district was in dire need of manpower resource for the development of many critical areas, especially in the field of education.

Responding to the DCE’s comments, the Chief Executive Officer of Volunteers Ghana, Mr Benjamin Avornyotse, who led the group, thanked the DCE for his support and outlined the mission and vision of the group.

He said the trip to the East Gonja District formed part of the long-term goal of the group to assist in nation building by offering humanitarian assistance to deprived communities in Ghana.

He explained that the group would provide voluntary services in 41 communities in the district within the months of June and July, which would take the form of teaching in understaffed basic and second cycle schools in the district.

The volunteers would also donate some basic items such as books and clothing  to needy students.

Participating universities

He mentioned that the volunteers were drawn from the University of Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the University of Cape Coast, University of Education Winneba, the Ghana Institute of Journalism, and the University of Development Studies among other educational institutions.

In a related development, the  Paramount Chief of Salaga, the Kpembewura, welcomed the volunteers to his palace, and thanked them for the kind initiative.

He also pledged the full commitment of the traditional council to ensure their safety in the community.
