Vote counting still underway as presidential elections close in Togo

Counting of ballot papers has begun for the presidential election in the Republic of Togo.

The exercise which is considered by many as very crucial, is being supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Voting started at 7am and ended at 4pm and was generally peaceful.
The streets have been very quiet and people are eager to know what the results would be.

The Daily Graphic team covering the election observed long queues of voters who were waiting patiently for their turns to cast their vote, while others were seen going through the register to ensure that they were at the right stations.

It was observed that the process was smooth at all the stations. In a few cases, some of the voters who went to checked the register and realised they had gone to the wrong stations,  had to be directed to the right places.

At the Protestant College Centre, the Head of the Centre, Mr Aholu Yaovi said the programme had been going on peacefully and was very happy about the turnout at the centre which had 15 polling stations.

About 10am when the Daily Graphic visited the EPP Tokoin Centre, over 200 people had cast their vote. At the Lycee Solidarite Centre at 10.20 am, the Chef of the Centre,

Mr Kpeglo Komlar Messan said 461 people had voted for polling stations 6 and station 7 also recorded 461 voters.

At 3.08pm, over 200 people had voted at the EPP Weme Polling  station 3 at Tsevie, while  the Ecole Premiere Catholic (EPC) Saint Jean polling station number 1also recorded over 200 votes by 3.20pm.

By 3.40pm, 262 people out of the 481 who had registered at Mairie Tsevie number 1 polling station had voted. 

By 10 30aaam, Mr Jean Pierre Fabre, candidate of the Opposition Alliance for Change had cast his vote at the Lycee de Kodjoviakope polling centre where voting had also gone on peacefully.

The candidate of the Union pour La Republique (UNIR), Mr Gnassingbe Faure Essonzimna, cast his vote at the Ecole Primairie Publique Camp General Gnassingbe Eyadema  (EPP Camp GGE) polling station number 7 at about 8am. Voting went on peacefully at this centre which has 14 poling stations.
