We’ll do more this year— Akwei Thompson

According to him, certain kinds of work that the assemblies undertook required support from the government in order that they were carried out successfully.

He encouraged the leadership of the assembly to come up with innovative ways of generating revenue, if it was to meet the social and economic needs of the people in the municipality.

“We also need to work as a team if the region is to achieve our targets as an assembly and region,” he stated.

He urged assembly staff members not to be overly influenced by their political inclination but rather work to meet performance targets.

He charged members of the assembly to exhibit professionalism in the discharge of their duties and endeavour to undertake a sound layout of the municipality to facilitate its speedy development.

Challenges

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, was concerned with the poor road network in the municipality.

He said only six per cent of roads in the Ga South Municipality were passable, a situation he said was affecting revenue generation.

He cited other challenges facing the assembly as chieftaincy and land disputes.

He said almost every community in the municipality was plagued with those problems, which is affecting the smooth management and execution of development projects.

Achievements

In spite of difficulties it was facing, the Ga South Municipal Assembly has since its formation about eight years ago made strides with regards to the development of the area.

The assembly has established a number of schools, built health facilities and constructed bridges across streams and culverts.

Mr Thompson said this year, the assembly hoped to spend GH¢500,000 on education and related facilities.

He said the assembly would also construct a health facility that would deal with accident and emergency cases only.
