We will stop Concerned Ghanaians Group demo — Police

The Accra Regional Police Command says it will not hesitate to use legitimate means to restrain the Concerned Ghanaians Group from embarking on their planned demonstration during the Independence Day celebration on March 6, 2015.

The command said the pressure group had notified the police in accordance with the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491) to embark on a demonstration on March 6, this year.

However, the police have requested that the group postpone the date due to the considerable role the police would play across the country during the national assignment.

“With all the explanations given, the group has refused to consider a postponement and has deliberately decided to take the law into its own hands to act otherwise,” the command stated.

In a statement issued in Accra last Thursday and signed by the Public Affairs Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ms Effia Tenge, the police said in as much as they respected the constitutional and fundamental human rights of every individual and groups of people to hold special events, the collective decision of any group should, however, fall in line with the Public Order Act, which explicitly spell out the modalities and proper conduct of such events.

“As such, any attempt by any group of people to demonstrate on the said date which is likely to jeopardise the grand celebration of the 58th Anniversary of the country will not be countenanced.”

“Taking the strong decision of the group into consideration, the police are likely to use whatever powers accorded it by Section 6 of the Public Order Act to prohibit the leadership of the group to revert the decision,” the statement said.

It added that the police were also prepared to give the group the maximum protection and security should they “rescind their decision and postpone the date to another day apart from March 6, 2015.”
