"Wee" smoker and seller jailed for a day

A “wee” smoker who was caught smoking behind the National Security Barracks at Madina in the Greater Accra Region was on Monday handed a day’s prison sentence with 15 penalty unit by an Accra Circuit Court 10.

The convict, Richard Asiamah, 32, a mechanic was jailed alongside the seller of the illicit drug, Daniel Mamoud, 18, a sales boy.

Daniel Mamoud was, however, given a 200 penalty unit in addition to his day’s sentence.

The court, presided over by Justice Aboagye Tanor said the convicts were given a day’s sentence on the instance that they showed remorse during trial and did not waste the court’s time by readily accepting guilty of their charge.

The convicts were charged for illegally possessing contraband drugs.

The police prosecutor, Chief Inspector K. Adu, who presented the facts of the case told the court that on October 14, 2017, Richard Asiamah was arrested by the police at about 9:00pm when he was caught smoking dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drug behind the National Security Barracks at Madina.

He said when Asiamah was caught, he tried to hide the suspected narcotic drug but a search conducted on him by the police found the substance on him.

He told the court that while in police custody, the convict mentioned the name of Daniel Mamoud as the one who sold the said substance to him and led the police to Mamoud’s place at Ritz junction in Madina.

Chief Inspector Adu said Mamoud was arrested and sent to the police custody, adding that a search at Mamoud’s residence led to the discovery of 16 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be illicit drugs, which he (Mamoud) claimed ownership.

Having pleaded guilty to their charges, the convicts, Asiamah and Mamoud were given the sentence.

However, failure to pay the fine associated with their sentence, including a bond of good behaviour would mean that both Asiamah and Mamoud would serve 30 days and six months prison sentences respectively.
