Organised by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Ghana, in collaboration with the Cranfield University, UK, the programme is aimed at equipping participants with enough skills on security to contribute to the development, implementation and review of national security and defence policies in the sub-region.

The participants are from Ghana, La Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Togo.

Objectives of programme

Addressing the participants in the opening ceremony in Accra yesterday, a facilitator of the programme, Dr Laura Cleary, said the course would equip participants with skills in facilitating inter-ministerial co-operation and co-ordination on security and defence issues within the sub-region.

Dr Cleary said the course would also enhance the understanding of policy and strategy as far as development in the regions was concerned.

Additionally, she said, the programme would introduce participants to principles and techniques for effective management of the security sector.

KAIPTC

To achieve the major objectives set out for the two-week course, the Commandant at the KAIPTC, Major General Obed B. Akwa, said the beneficiaries would be taken through topics that were linked to the concept of security, human rights and governance, civilian and democratic control of the security sector.

They would also discuss policy formulation, emerging security issues, development in Africa, and human resource management and its relevance in defence and security and strategic management and planning in Africa.
