Western, Western North queen mothers support Sekondi Prisons

Paramount Queens of the Western and Western North regions have called for continuous support for vulnerable groups in society at this critical moment of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The queens described as sad, the emergence of the virus which they said has substantially changed rules, social structure and threaten human existence.

The queens made the call after donating support items to the Sekondi Prisons of the Ghana Prisons Service to support inmates to stay safe and well.

The items
Items donated included toiletries, crates of egg, bags of rice, assorted medication for their infirmaries, liquid soaps and sanitizers.

Speaking on behalf of the Queens in both regions, Nana Akosua Gyamfiaba II, Paramount Queen of Shama Traditional Area, said “our support was different from the usual hand washing equipment.”

She said in order not to meet the prisons’ most urgent needs, “We decided to reach out to them and find out what their basic and immediate needs for daily use are so it could guide us in our deliberations.”

She said in the face of the loss of lives and economic downturn brought on by the Covid-19, there was the need to support the vulnerable who require constant support.

She said while it was unfortunate the inmates found themselves at the wrong side of the law and thus have no liberty to do things on their own, they needed the support of the rest of society.

“We decided to lend our support to those who really needed this care owing to the fact that since the emergence of the pandemic in the country, many businesses have been affected except a few which are into tissues, hand sanitizer, Veronica buckets and others”, she said.

Going forward, Nana Gyamfiaba said they would focus on other vulnerable groups such as the elderly and other defenseless groups to make the society a better place for all.

She called on members of society who can support the needy bear these difficult times not to withhold such support as the world awaits the end of Covid-19, saying “Our unfortunate members of society who have found themselves at the wrong side of the law still need society’s help.”

Officials of the prison expressed gratitude to the queens for the support.
