Wontumi faces assault charges in court amidst heavy security

Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako faces a charge of assaulting a public officer, police sources have told Graphic Online.

He has been taken to the Asokwa circuit court in a convoy of armed policemen in armoured and riot control vehicles.

Antwi Boasiako, also called Chairman Wontumi, is alleged to have beaten the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah and the NPP constituency secretary, Felix Ibrahim.

On Wednesday, lawyers for the two alleged victims, wrote to the Ashanti Regional Police Commander to serve notice the complainants have opted for settlement.

“Our clients are the complainants in the above mentioned case against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO @ CHAIRMAN WONTUMI. Our clients have instructed us of their decision to pursue settlement and have accordingly instructed us to serve you notice of their said intention,” said the letter in part.

On Wednesday morning as the security convoy drove out, scores of party supporters were at the Central Police Station where he was kept overnight . 

Chairman Wontumi, bespectacled and wearing a black shirt over which hanged a large bling and a crucifix, temporarily emerged from the open-top vehicle he was being driven in to acknowledge the cheers of party supporters.
