The acting Chief Executive officer of the hospital, Rev.  Albert Botchway, said this at an awards ceremony where some staff members were honoured for their contributions to the development of the hospital.

He drew attention to a recent head count at the hospital, and explained that it was part of efforts to reduce the “hemorrhage” on the hospital’s payroll.

“The exercise is proceeding steadily and we will in due course seal all the leakages. We are also embarking on a similar exercise to block loopholes in our revenue collection mechanisms,” he added.

Infrastructure

Rev. Botchway said the hospital was on the threshold of a new beginning, with the current massive retooling by the government through the national equipment replacement project.

“Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is getting new equipment and infrastructure costing about  GH¢70 million”.

Rev. Botchway said under the project, the hospital had received a new MRI machine, a 640-slide CT scan machine and a host of other radiographical equipment, while 13 of the 23 theatres were also being renovated.

Awards

The award was introduced to motivate staff to offer their best.

In all, 32 staff drawn from the various departments of the hospital were awarded.

Miss Mary Sowah of the Department of Surgery received the best worker of the year award, while the Surgical SUB-BMC received the award for the best department.

Miss Sowah, who had been working with the hospital for close to 26 years, attributed her success to her passion for the job.

She said her greatest joy was to see her patients recover from their illnesses.

Miss Sowah impressed on all staff of the hospital to work selflessly, despite the challenges, to bring relief to society and make the hospital great.
