Korle Bu Polyclinic receives ICT equipment : To facilitate e-health programme

A Deputy Minister of Communication, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has presented Information and communications technology (ICT) equipment to the management of the Korle Bu Polyclinic for the implementation of an e-health programme.

The 21 desktop computers, 21 UPS, five network and two multi-function printers are meant to enhance healthcare delivery to the people within the polyclinic’s operational area.

Mr Ofosu stated that the government was committed to achieving the objectives set for the health sector and added that “government will always put the health needs of its people first. The government’s policy objective in the health sector is aimed at reducing excessive risk and burden of morbidity, mortality and disability in the poor and marginalised groups. Government also aims to reduce inequalities in accessing healthcare, reproductive and nutrition services, as well as prolong their life expectancy rate,” he indica

Transformation

Mr Ofosu said ICT played an integral role in the transformation and development of all sectors of the economy, including the health sector.

“The e-Health Solution is a comprehensive level Hospital Information Management System (HIS), Radiology Information System/Picture Archiving and Communication System (RIS/PAC) for managing the automation needs of every segment in the healthcare environment and delivery chain,” he added.

According to Mr Ofosu, the system is broadly divided into the front office, clinical back office and additional modules and interface that are targeted at increasing overall efficiency and effectiveness in healthcare delivery.

Project

The deputy minister further indicated that the system was capable of retrieving and disseminating patient-specific data across the entire health enterprise. He said under the project, 150 desktop computers had been distributed to three pilot hospitals. They are the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Wa and Zebila regional and district hospitals, respectively.

He said the project was in collaboration with the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), an ICT implementation agency of the Ministry of Communications.

The minister also stated that the project would be sustained through NITA’s continuous support and maintenance in order to develop national e-health standards and the delivery of specific national e-health infrastructure foundation, including testing, certification and compliance.

Mr Ofosu entreated the management and staff of the facility to put the equipment to good use and also ensure its regular maintenance for sustainability.

A family physician and lecturer at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, Dr Akye Essuman, on behalf of the polyclinic, expressed appreciation to the benefactors for the support and gave an assurance that the equipment would be used for the intended purposes.
