NHIA pays over GH¢157m in claims to health facilities nationwide

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed more than GH¢157 million in claims to healthcare service providers across the country in April 2026, as part of efforts to sustain uninterrupted healthcare delivery under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

According to a statement from the Authority’s Claims Directorate, the payments were made in two tranches — GH¢43.7 million on 14 April and GH¢113.6 million on 30 April 2026.

The disbursement covered both accrued, unvetted claims dating as far back as 2019, which had remained outstanding due to what the Authority described as “isolated peculiar challenges”, as well as vetted claims extending up to March 2026.

The NHIA explained that the timely settlement of claims forms part of its broader commitment to ensuring that healthcare providers are adequately resourced to deliver uninterrupted services to NHIS members across the country.

In terms of distribution, private health facilities received the largest share of the payments, followed by public and mission hospitals. High-volume facilities accounted for 64 per cent of the total claims settled, while clinics and health centres received 23 per cent. Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds accounted for nine per cent, with specialised facilities receiving the remaining four per cent.

The Authority reiterated its resolve to continue clearing outstanding arrears and strengthening the financial capacity of health facilities nationwide to improve service delivery and support the sustainability of the health insurance scheme.
