Armah Kofi Buah's reaction after voting at Ellembelle

The Deputy leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament, Mr Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has expressed high hopes that change is imminent to liberate Ghanaians from what he described as economic bondage the country has been plunged into.

After voting in the Ellembelle Constituency, he said the commencement of voting symbolised freedom for many Ghanaians and the future of the country.

“Today is the beginning of liberation for Ghanaians who for the last 8 years have suffered under excruciating economic hardship under the Bawumia-Akuffo-Addo government,” he said.

He said the process which started early this morning represented liberty for the youth who were unemployed and have not seen any hope in the horizon. “Today represents hope for all these vulnerable groups and young people themselves.”

“As you have seen the euphoria in the atmosphere, I can say we cannot wait to see the freedom we want – We, the country Ghana, must vote for the NDC candidates, John Dramani Mahama and all the parliamentary candidates to take over the reins and reset the country,” he said.

The freedom that is coming, he said, would meet the needs of many, the market women, the man on the street, the artisans, students, all businesses and many others as well as those who have lost hope and lost everything after many years of service to God and country – today is freedom for all pensioners. We must put an end to the unfairness,” he said.

He said it was very sad the country was seeing an unfortunate situation, which has resulted in environmental degradation and pollution of many water bodies for self-interest, which has become a threat to our existence, “today is the day we reset Ghana".

The freedom the country seeks today is the one that is devoid of intimidation, where the media can lawfully and freely work, freedom for institutions to work again without manipulation.

In the many stations visited in Sekondi-Takoradi, voter turnout was not encouraging. Many of the officials were not too busy at the places visited in Sekondi.

However, one encouraging thing was that at many of these centres, people were trickling in and it took less than five minutes to vote.

The areas visited included Takoradi, Kwesmintsim, Effia, Sekondi and Essikadu-Ketan. In the Ellembelle, Jomoro, Nzema East constituencies of the Western Region, the process recorded early voters who trooped to various voting centres to cast their ballots.

The signs of voter apathy were more in the metropolis and the municipal areas. At the polling stations, there was no sign of intimidation or confrontation as voters came in bits.

At some of the centres there were no queues at all and voters spent fewer minutes at the stations. Officials express the hope that they will continue to come in bits to improve the numbers.
