Samuel Sarpong - Ashanti Regional Minister

Ashanti NDC Zongo Caucus focuses on peace

The Ashanti Regional Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has disassociated itself from recent calls for the removal of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong, by a group called the Coalition of Zongo Youth.

In a press release signed by the Regional Communication officer, Mr Awal Mohammed, it said the Zongo Caucus had nothing to do with the “alien group.”

The statement gave the assurance that  the Zongo Caucus in the region would not do anything to mar the peace in the region.

“We want to put on record that the said group has no affiliation whatsoever with NDC Zongo Caucus, Ashanti Region, and its members can definitely not be part of us,” the statement said.

Last week, the Coalition of Zongo Youth called on President John Dramani Mahama to relieve the minister of his post because he was not serving the interest of the party.

The group said the minister’s action could jeopardise the party’s fortunes in the 2016 general election in the region.

The coalition said due to the apparent crucial nature of the 2016 general election, there was the need to clear all bottlenecks that could affect the fortunes of the party in the region.

The statement said much as the coalition had every right to express its opinion, there was the need for them to avoid any act that could dent the image of the party and that of its members.

It said as a recognised wing of the party (Ashanti Regional Zongo Caucus of the NDC), its prime focus was to rebrand and revitalise the Zongo Caucus in the region to fall in tandem with President John Dramani Mahama's vision of winning one million votes in the next election.
