An emergency meeting convened by the Adentan Municipal Assembly yesterday rejected the master plan for the Adentan Sub-Urban Centre redevelopment project earmarked for the Aviation land at Adentan.

In a nine-three majority decision with one abstention, the assembly members, who were supported by the Member of Parliament for Adentan, Mr Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, rejected the site plan and referred it to the Statutory Planning Committee of the Assembly for a re-design before presenting it for approval.

Under the Adentan Sub-Urban Centre redevelopment project, 3,000 apartments, a shopping mall, a hospital, schools and hotels, as well as other business activities, have been earmarked to improve the living conditions of the people in Adentan and its surrounding communities.

Tension-packed

The meeting, which was tension-packed and was characterised by   intermittent shouts and arguments, forced the Presiding Member, Madam Gladys Naadu Gillian Tetteh, to interrupt after two hours of give-and-take.

It was clear from the beginning that it was not going to be smooth, when members objected to a heavy police presence, with a request that only police officers from the Adentan Municipality should be allowed on the premises.

Explaining the position of the assembly after the vote, Madam Tetteh said members were not against the redevelopment of the Aviation land, “but we think the process was not exhaustive”.

She said, for instance, that members felt that they were not consulted and, per their mandate, did not approve the redesigning of the land for the Sub-Urban Centre.

In addition, members felt that the action of the then Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Nubyl Kakra Vanlare, who chaired the Statutory Planning Committee, was unconstitutional, since she was out of office as of the time she authorised the approval of the master plan.

Committee to meet minister

The members, therefore, requested that the committee meet with the regional minister, who currently has oversight responsibility over the assembly for the necessary amendment and approval.

The members, who refused to make inputs into the master plan, citing illegitimacy of the chairman of the committee, also said they were not impressed with the 26.7-acre land allotted to the municipal assembly.

They requested for a  fitting palace for the chief of Adentan.

Making a presentation to members of the Assembly, Mr Frank Tackie, the director of the consortium, a construction company contracted to undertake the redevelopment on the Adentan Aviation land, announced that a 42-acre land had been earmarked for the traditional authority.

He said the municipal assembly stood to benefit from the redevelopment project, stressing that it would bring revenue to the assembly, as well as create jobs for the youth.
