Bawumia Outlines anti-corruption strategy focused on systems and digitalisation
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to combat corruption through enhanced digitalisation and system reforms.
Speaking at the launch of his manifesto last Sunday, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of transparency and the need to eliminate corruption at its source by creating robust systems that prevent corrupt practices before they occur.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the success of recent digital initiatives, such as the elimination of ghost names from the government payroll through the use of the Ghanacard, and proposed further steps to advance this fight.
He stated his commitment to moving Ghana towards a cashless economy, which would increase traceability in financial transactions and reduce opportunities for corruption.
The Vice President noted that the Bank of Ghana has already laid the groundwork for this transition by implementing various digital payment systems, including mobile money interoperability and the Universal QR Code payment system.
Additionally, the Bank has piloted a digital currency, the e-cedi, in Sefwi Wiawso, which is expected to further enhance transparency and reduce risks such as fraud and money laundering.
Dr. Bawumia also announced plans to implement blockchain technology and smart contracts to improve transparency in government transactions. These measures are intended to ensure that all government activities are permanently traceable and secure, contributing to a more efficient and corruption-free administration.
Dr. Bawumia’s approach marks a shift from traditional methods of combating corruption, focusing instead on leveraging technology to create a transparent and accountable system that prevents corruption from taking root.
