Bawumia proposes shift to solar energy as primary source of electricity
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated his proposal to transition Ghana’s reliance on oil and gas for energy production to solar power if elected into office.
Speaking at the Church of Pentecost in Teshie on September 12, 2024, as part of his campaign tour, he promised to add 2,000 megawatts of solar power to the country’s energy production.

He stated that this shift could reduce electricity tariffs by up to 50 per cent.
Dr Bawumia, who is also running as the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), acknowledged that producing 2,000 megawatts of solar energy would require a large number of solar panels. To avoid importing these panels, he pledged to establish factories in Ghana for their manufacture.
He mentioned that this initiative would also help tackle the country's unemployment crisis.
