Biakoye, South Dayi assemblies finally get DCEs
The Biakoye and South Dayi district assemblies in the Volta Region have finally endorsed their respective District Chief Executive (DCE) nominees after several months of being without substantive political heads.
Members of the two assemblies last Friday voted in separate meetings to confirm the nominations of Madam Comfort Attah and Mr Ernest Kojo Mallet as DCEs for Biakoye and South Dayi districts respectively.
Biakoye
The confirmation poll for the Biakoye assembly, which was held at the assembly hall of the Nkonya Senior High School in the district capital, saw Madam Attah polling 42 out of 47 votes cast in a second-round of poll.
This was after she was a vote short of the required two-thirds majority to clinch a first-round confirmation.
With her endorsement, Madam Comfort Attah becomes the only female DCE among the 25 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Volta Region.
An earlier nominee, Madam Millicent Kabuki Carbo, failed to secure endorsement from the assembly members during three previous confirmation polls, a situation which compelled the President to replace her with Madam Attah, who is a teacher by profession.
South Dayi
It was, however, an easy exercise for Mr Mallet during his confirmation poll at Kpeve as he secured a 100 per cent endorsement from members.
Mr Mallet, who also replaced a three-time failed nominee, Madam Ella Boateng, polled all 29 votes of the assembly members in a first-round poll to secure the DCE position for the area.
His confirmation also ends months of agitations by some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who were opposed to the nomination of the first nominee, Madam Boateng.
Get to Work
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, who together with his deputy, Mr Maxwell Blagodzi, witnessed the confirmation process at both Biakoye and South Dayi assemblies, asked the new DCEs to get to work immediately, as their respective jurisdictions were far behind in the implementation of the government’s flagship policies and programmes.
He also called for the maximum support of all stakeholders in the two districts, especially assembly members and traditional leaders, for the President’s representatives to effectively deliver on the mandate of the government.
Both Madam Attah and Mr Mallet pledged to work assiduously towards the realisation of the hopes and aspirations of the citizens in their respective districts of Biakoye and South Dayi.
