David Apasera leads PNC - Dani Baah takes over chairmanship

A tsunami swept away some old executive members of the People’s National Convention (PNC) last Wednesday as a new crop of leaders took over the administration of the party at its national congress.

Most shocking of those defeated was Mr Bernard Mornah who was tipped to retain the chairmanship but lost to a former Deputy Minister of Health, Mr Moses Dani Baah.

Mr Baah garnered 1297 votes as against the 1,266 votes of Mr Mornah.

In another shockwave, Mr David Apasera polled 1,315 to win the flag bearer position of the party as against 465 votes garnered by Rev Samuel Adjei-Debrah, who was also tipped to win the flag bearer position. The third contestant for the flag bearer position, Mr Sampson Asaki Awingobit, polled 789 votes to place second in the race.

Other winners

For the Vice-Chairman slot, Mr Henry Haruna Asante won with 1,729 votes against Hajia Hajara Musah Ali's 946 votes, Mr Omar Ahmed Bekure's 635, Eugene T.K. Bashiru's 375.

The position of General Secretary went to Ms Janet Asana Nabla as she emerged victorious with 1,312 votes as against Mr Emmanuel Wilson Jnr's 1,041 votes and Mr Kobe McDonald's 230 votes.

Mr Abass Nuhu was elected as the National Organiser with 1,124 votes.

His competitors Ntow Desmond Twumasi and Daniel Nii Noi got 773 and 639 votes respectively.

Women’s Organiser

Ms Hidaya Sungjun Ibrahim polled 1,249 votes to win the organiser position as against 756 votes garnered by Ms Esther Osei Danso and 317 votes of Ms Patience Lamisi Adam Johnson and 236 votes by Ms Hummi Sinare Sinanka.

Those who went unopposed and confirmed were Mr Emmanuel A. Akannae, treasurer; Mr Mark Arko Ewusi, youth organiser; Prince Agyemang Dua, deputy youth organiser, and Mr Issahaque Awudulai as Communication Secretary.

Restoring the party

In his address after his victory, the flag bearer, Mr Apasera, promised to bring back life into the party which had over the years suffered some setbacks.

“This is a great party. When I look back at Dr Hilla Limann, who was overthrown for doing nothing wrong, I have to serve this party to honour his name,” the former three-term Member of Bolgatanga said.

Mr Apasera served as MP for the constituency in 2000, 2004, and 2008.

“I am going to work hard to let Ghanaians know that PNC is a vehicle that can lead to the Jubilee House. We are hitting the ground at a fifth gear to be able to catch up with the other parties,” he added.

Concession

In his concession speech, Mr Mornah commended the leadership of the party for how far it had brought the party despite the challenges.

“Today my leadership has come to an end I wish the winners the very best in their stewardship. It is my hope that where we failed, they will succeed and make the PNC a better party,” he added.

For his part, Mr Dani Baah promised to rejuvenate the party and make it attractive within his tenure.

“Our party has shrunk to a certain level which is very worrying. Our predecessors have done their bit and I will make sure the party doesn’t remain the same,” he said.
