MP establishes GH¢1m scholarship fund to support brilliant, needy students

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Yapei Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, has launched a GH¢1 million Education Scholarship Fund aimed at supporting brilliant but needy students within his constituency.

The initiative, which targets learners from the basic to tertiary levels, seeks to alleviate the financial burden on parents while promoting equitable access to quality education for all children, regardless of their background.

Launch

Speaking at the official launch, held over the weekend, Mr Jinapor underscored the importance of investing in education as a foundation for national progress.

He described education as the “most powerful tool for transforming lives and communities,” stressing that a well-educated population is essential for Ghana’s long-term socio-economic development.

“I must reiterate the critical role education plays in the nation’s socio-economic development and the need to pay greater attention in that area — for this generation and the generation yet unborn,” he said.

Mr Jinapor, who is also the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, explained that the scholarship scheme would cover tuition fees, learning materials, and other essential costs associated with schooling.

He assured constituents that the fund would be managed in a transparent and accountable manner, with clear criteria to ensure that only deserving students benefit.

“We will put in place strict measures to guarantee fairness, so that every cedi disbursed directly benefits the student it is intended for,” he added.

Students

The MP also used the occasion to urge parents and guardians to show greater commitment to their children’s education.

While promising to do his part through initiatives such as the scholarship fund, he reminded parents that they also have a duty to guide, support, and encourage their wards to stay focused in school.

“It is one thing to provide financial support, but it is another to ensure that our children make good use of the opportunities presented to them,” he said.

He further encouraged students to take their studies seriously, emphasising that hard work and discipline remain key ingredients for success.

Development agenda

The Yapei Kusawgu Education Scholarship Fund, according to Mr Jinapor, is part of a broader development agenda he is pursuing in the constituency — one that prioritizes youth empowerment, skills training, and sustainable development.

He said many young people in the area have the potential to excel but are often constrained by financial challenges.

The establishment of the fund, he said, was a step toward bridging that gap and nurturing the next generation of leaders and professionals from Yapei Kusawgu.

Mr Jinapor expressed optimism that the fund would have a lasting impact on the lives of beneficiaries, helping them to contribute meaningfully to their families, communities, and the nation at large.

“When we invest in education, we are investing in the future.

These young people will one day become the doctors, teachers, engineers, and entrepreneurs who will drive Ghana’s development,” he stated.
