NPP National Council decides to proceed with conference

The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided to proceed with its National Delegates Conference as scheduled, despite a petition to change the date.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee of the National Delegates Conference, Joseph Osei-Owusu, disclosed this to the media yesterday after the National Council meeting in Accra.

"The steps that we have taken are far too deep to turn back, so we will continue," he said.

The former first Deputy Speaker of Parliament said the council considered the petition, but decided to continue with the conference due to the preparations and commitments already made.

Ablekuma North

The council, Mr Osei-Owusu said, also discussed the recent rerun of 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary election and the conflicting signals regarding the party's decision not to contest.

The former Member of Parliament for Bekwai stated that the party maintained its decision not to contest, and the council generally reached a consensus on the matter.

He said the council accepted an apology from the party's parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who lost the rerun election by 289 votes.

He said the apology was taken in good faith, and the party emphasised the importance of respecting its structures in the future.

Mr Osei-Owusu stated that the party did not regret not officially declaring support for Ms Afriyie, as the party's position of not contesting remained unchanged.

Background

The NPP is scheduled to hold its National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.

The theme for the conference is “Rebuilding Together with Our Values.”

The conference is a crucial event that will deliberate on key matters, including amendments to the party’s constitution.

The proposed amendments are to reshape the party and make it stronger and more resilient for the future.

The conference will discuss the National Chairman’s statement, report of the General Secretary, and statements of account from the National Treasurer.

The party will also consider amendments to its constitution, including outstanding proposals from 2019 and new amendments resulting from the 2024 general election.
