Protect integrity of parliamentary democracy - Dr Kumi-Korsah to students

A Senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr Anastasia Nana Ama Kumi-Korsah, has urged students engaged in politics to help uphold and protect the integrity of Ghana’s parliamentary democracy by promoting tolerance, accountability and respect for the rule of law.

She said parliamentary processes remained the cornerstone of democratic governance and must be safeguarded against actions that could undermine public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.

Dr Kumi-Korsah made the call at the inaugural sitting of the Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) Parliamentary Council of the UCC.

She noted that Ghana’s democratic progress could only be sustained when political actors placed the national interest above partisan considerations.

“Parliamentary democracy thrives on dialogue, consensus-building, and mutual respect.

We must all work together to protect the integrity of the system and strengthen the confidence of the people in democratic governance,” she stated.

Dr Kumi-Korsah urged the student representatives to conduct themselves in a manner that reflected the dignity of the University and the trust reposed in them by their colleagues.

She also appealed to the media and civil society organisations to continue to play constructive roles in deepening democratic accountability through objective reporting and enhanced civic engagement.

Polarisation

She said increasing political polarisation and the spread of misinformation posed significant threats to democratic stability and national cohesion.

Dr Kumi-Korsah, who is also a parliamentary aspirant for the Cape Coast North Constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, encouraged the students to actively participate in democratic processes while upholding the values of patriotism, discipline and tolerance.

The Speaker of the FASA Parliamentary Council, Lydia Akuffo, congratulated the elected members and urged them to discharge their duties responsibly.

She reminded them of the challenges ahead and encouraged them to remain steadfast and united in overcoming obstacles during their tenure.

Ms Akuffo called for cooperation and collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the successful achievement of the Council’s mission.  — GNA
