Support implementation of govt polices - Dr Ato Arthur
The Head of the Local Government Service (LGS), Dr Nana Ato Arthur, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Coordinating Directors (MMDCDs) to support the implementation of government policies in their various areas.
He tasked the MMDCDs in the proposed Oti Region enclave to ensure that government achieved its target in implementing her development agenda.
Dr Ato Arthur made the remarks when he met MMDCDs in the Oti enclave of the Volta Region during a day’s working visit to the area.
First hand information
The meeting was to have first-hand information on how MMDCDs were planning ahead towards the creation of the proposed Oti Region with respect to human resource, infrastructure and logistics.
The proposed Oti Region comprises Krachi West, Krachi East, Krachi Nchumuru, Nkwanta North, Nkwanta South, Kadjebi Akan, Jasikan and Biakoye districts.
Dr Ato Arthur, since assumption of office, has visited over 100 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.
He said it was important to recognise that the work of the LGS was in the field and that called for the working visits to selected MMDAs.
Role to play
Dr Ato Arthur said the LGS had a role to play in the implementation of government policies and also ensure her development agenda succeeded.
He said there was the need for MMDCDs to show passion by supporting their Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the impending referendum.
It will be recalled that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in late 2017, appointed a Commission of Enquiry to look into the demand for the creation of new regions and to make recommendations on all the factors involved in the creation, alteration or merger of regions in the country.
The commission, led by Justice Brobbey, a retired Supreme Court Judge, started its work in late November 2017 and submitted its recommendation to the President in June 2018.
The commission recommended the creation of six new regions, namely, Ahafo, Brong East, North East, Oti, Savannah and Western North and that the referendum should be limited only to the areas directly impacted.
Consequently, the Electoral Commission set December 27, for the referendum.
