‘Govt of President-elect must deliver on promises’

A number of people have expressed the hope that the government of President-elect Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will deliver on its promises.

They were of the view that since the electorate made a choice from the manifesto and promises of the political parties, it behoved the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to fulfil its campaign promises and give hope to the people.

This came to light during a random interview conducted  by the Daily Graphic in Accra to sample opinion on the expectations of the electorate after the December 7, 2016 elections.

The Director of Corporate Communication of the African University College of Communications (AUCC), Mr Ogochukwu Chidiebere Nweke, urged the NPP to focus on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Ghana.

According to him, ensuring the achievement of the SDGs which was the basis of their manifesto, would ensure high standard of living for the citizens in the country.

“I think we must all embrace the reality that whatever is going on in the country is as a result of global challenges,” he said.

Infrastructure development

Mr Nweke said the NDC government’s focus on infrastructural development would facilitate the growth of businesses during the reign of the NPP administration.

He, therefore, urged the incoming administration to put forth an agenda that would ensure that there was continuous progress in the economy.

Act on the manifesto

A teacher, Mr John Kweku Amissah, said much should not be expected from the incoming government, since a government of the NPP could only do so much based on promises in its manifesto.

He said he believed the NDC government lost the election because of corrupt practices such as the case involving Mr Alfred Woyome and the failure of the government to retrieve the huge sum from him.

Engage the private sector

A Communication Specialist, Mr Samuel Ato Afful, urged the incoming government to create an enabling environment for private businesses to thrive.

“I would be disappointed if after two years in government there is no policy geared toward stimulating the private sector in Ghana,” he said.

According to him, when there is confidence in the economy, it would trigger the dollar to drop and this would in turn cause a reduction in prices of goods and services.

Reduction of VAT

A car dealer at Adabraka, Mr Emmanuel Gyan, said the NPP government should reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on imported cars and goods in order to allow more people to venture into the business.

“I believe when the VAT is reduced, automatically fuel prices and transport fares will also come down,” he said.
