Group supports Abodakpi’s NDC chairman bid

A group calling itself Friends of Abodakpi has noted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in transition and needs a new face and an experienced politician to steer its national affairs.

The group pointed out that the political exploits of Mr Abodakpi, a leading member of the party, could lead the party to victory in the 2016 general election.

Looking at the socio-political trend in Ghana today, ‘‘we need Mr Abodakpi, the current Ambassador to Malaysia and former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Keta Constituency in the Volta Region, to steer the affairs of the party.

The National Spokesperson of the group, Mr Naublay Armoo,  said he (Mr Abodakpi) was endowed with local and international political skills and given the chance to take charge as national chairman of the party would bring emphatic victory to the party.’’

He told the Daily Graphic that Mr Abodakpi had been a key player in the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and part of the formation of the NDC, and so with his wealth of experience, he would be able to chair the NDC without any blemish.

He reasoned that ‘‘having contributed to Ghana’s transition from military to civilian rule and having been part of the two types of governance, we think that he can initiate pragmatic programmes and policies that will suit today’s trend of politics in Ghana.’’

Mr Armoo said the group acknowledged the contribution of  Dr Kwabena Adjei, the incumbent chairman of the party, adding that he had done his due, but looking at the situation at hand, he should respectfully leave the scene for someone like Abodakpi to assume the mantle of national chairman of the NDC.

According to him, the party needs a new face to chart a new direction and an efficient innovation that will make the party alive, attractive and accountable to others and members as well, and so ‘‘We are calling on Mr Abodakpi to descend home and contest the chairmanship slot to save it from collapse, and we will assist him with all our strength and wisdom to win.’’

The group noted with concern that, currently, there were no meetings ongoing at the various levels- polling station, constituency and regional- alleging that the respective executive were doing their own thing.

He observed that the term of office of the national executive had expired on December 7, 2013 but they were still hanging on to their positions without any notice of organising such an important election for would-be national executive members.

The group further indicated that the so-called introduction and adoption of biometric registration had not been done to pave the way for the party’s elections and, therefore, ‘‘it’s a concern for we friends of Abodakpi as to when fresh elections will be conducted for national executive positions.’’

‘‘We think and it is our firm conviction that Mr Abodakpi has the capacity to lead the party in the new political dispensation and towards total victory for the NDC.”
