LIST: These 7 Ministries have been axed by President John Mahama  

President John Dramani Mahama has implemented a restructuring of the government, reducing the number of ministries from 29 to 23 as part of a broader effort to streamline operations, cut inefficiencies, and ensure a leaner and more effective administration.

Among the key changes is the abolition of several ministries that existed under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The axed ministries are:

  • Ministry of Information
  • Ministry of National Security 
  • Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs 
  • Ministry of Railway Development
  • Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources
  • Ministry of Public Enterprises
  • Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (merged with Local Government)  

New and renamed Ministries

President Mahama has also introduced innovative ministries to address emerging priorities:  

  • The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has been established to focus on youth employment, skills development, and leadership. 
  • Previously known as the Ministry of Youth and Sports, it has been renamed to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
  • The renaming of the Ministry of Energy to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition underscores the administration’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental sustainability. 
  • The Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment reflects a renewed emphasis on job creation and labour issues.

President’s vision

The restructuring is seen as a necessary step to foster good governance, eliminate redundancies, and realign governmental priorities.

With this reorganisation, President Mahama has signalled his administration’s focus on strategic governance, innovation, and a commitment to addressing pressing national issues.
