Mahama administration cause of harsh economic conditions — Jake
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the Mahama administration of causing harsh economic conditions unrivalled in the country’s 57-year history.
The party said the unprecedented corruption perpetuated at the expense of the good people of Ghana by the Mahama administration was causing harsh economic conditions.
That was contained in a statement signed by the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, expressing its very best wishes to the government and people of Ghana on the occasion of 57 years of independence.
The statement stated that “as a people, we are proud and confident to have blazed the trail amongst countries south of the Sahara to have attained our right to self-rule, a right to think, a right to grow our lot, a right to development in freedom and with our destiny in our own hands.’’
However, the statement further stated that “as we celebrate our 57th anniversary, we do so with a heavy heart.’’
According to the statement, though governments had come and gone, both civilian and military, never in the country’s history have we been more ridiculed around the world than today.
Ghana, the statement said, was once a respected nation in the sub-region, the financial hub of West Africa, the gateway to Africa, but is now labelled a ‘Republic of Corruption’.
The dream of a truly democratic Ghana conceived 57 years ago, according to the statement, has dulled more than a little and hope had been replaced with dismay at the cheap pursuit of self-interest that pervades the present political and economic landscape.
The statement pointed out that for the past six years, Ghana had stopped working after 57 years of trying, and the NPP believed that Ghanaians have had enough of the lip service, as it is time all Ghanaians put their shoulder to the wheel with budding ideas and innovation to make sure that the nation succeed.
“Our agricultural produce must reach our markets; we must process our produce to not only feed our people but also for exports,” the statement stressed.
The statement said the country’s resources ought to be put to good use and not be misused through corrupt practices such as we have seen in recent times.
According to the statement, the country stood in need of leadership of ideas and pragmatism to lead the way in bringing aboard every Ghanaian to make the nation succeed.
It observed that the nation was at the crossroads yearning for leadership and bold measures towards a total and progressive transformation process out of the current challenges.
The statement challenged Ghanaians to reflect on the past and plan fervently towards the future, since the future was beckoning to leaders to bring freedom and opportunity to the common man, to the peasants and workers of Ghana.
The challenge, according to the statement, was to fight and end poverty, ignorance and disease; to build up a prosperous, democratic and progressive nation and to create social, economic and political institutions which would ensure justice and fullness of life to every man and woman, the statement concluded.
