He said fairness had been the watchword of the government, promising this would be followed to the letter.

He was speaking at separate ceremonies last Friday in Cape Coast where he addressed the Regional House of Chiefs, and at Ekumfi Essakyir, where he inspected work on a water supply project.

Water project

It involves, among other works, the construction of raw water intake, including a weir on the River Ochi Narkwa; construction of a conventional water treatment plant at Essakyir, a reservoir and pumping station; supply and laying of a treated water transmission pipeline; and  improvement in distribution network covering 10 kilometres.

Other works were the construction of 45 standpipes in beneficiary communities; technical support in the form of training to Ghana Water Company staff and post construction operational support.

The installation of the plant, which has the capacity to produce 3.6 million gallons of water a day, is complete and was producing an initial 500,000 gallons a day. What was left was the completion of the second phase that involved the distribution network.

The project had been designed in a way to benefit 162,534 people by the year 2025.

Financing

The Government of Ghana project started in September 2011 and costs 20,040,603 Euros.

The amount is made up of a concessionary loan of 10,894,071.79 Euros from the Belgian government and a commercial loan of 9,146,531.21 from the KBC Bank of Belgium.

Second phase

President Mahama gave the assurance that the second phase would be undertaken “immediately” to ensure that the people reaped maximum benefits from the project.

He said the government’s determination to provide quality water to all parts of the country was on course and praised his predecessor, the late Prof Mills for initiating the project.

Collins Dauda

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, said all the technicalities that delayed the second phase were being worked on to ensure full supply of water.

He assured the chiefs and people that his ministry was up to the task and  that nothing would be left to chance to improve the quality of life of the people.

Regional House of Chiefs

At the Regional House of Chiefs, President Mahama recounted some of the development projects the region had enjoyed under the tenure of Prof Mills when he was the vice president, and said every project promised would be delivered.

He called on the chiefs to help fight illegal mining, which is a threat to national development.

The President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs, Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, called for respect for the presidency of the state.

He said unnecessary attacks on the president by a section of the people were a source of concern, describing it as un-Ghanaian.

Accompanying the President was the Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong.
