MP supports Sang Community Hospital

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Mion Constituency in the Northern Region, Dr Ahmed Yakubu, has expressed concern about the way and manner in which a lot of sick people, especially pregnant women, lose their lives when being transported them from remote areas to the Sang Community Hospital in the constituency.

He observed that the Sang community and its environs usually faced a huge challenge transporting sick people to the health centre, especially pregnant women in labour, which has led to a lot of women losing their lives and and sometimes their unborn babies through delayed labour.

The MP has, therefore, donated six motorbikes, including two motorbike ambulances, all costing GH¢50,000, to the Sang Community Hospital at Sang, the constituency capital, to support quality healthcare delivery in the area.

Ambulances

The motorbikes are to meet the transportation needs of health personnel in the constituency while the motorbike ambulances are to help transport patients during emergency situations from remote communities to the hospital.

The donation was funded with Dr Yakubu's share of the National Health Insurance Fund for MPs.

In addition to the motorbikes, the MP for Mion also bought new engines for the rehabilitation of four old broken-down motorbikes to augment the transport strength of the health facility.

Dr Yakubu, who is also a Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of crops, stated that after a proper needs assessment of the hospital, he and the management decided to use part of his share of the National Health Insurance Fund for 2013 and 2014 to purchase the motorbikes and also to construct bungalows to meet the accommodation needs of the health personnel at Kpabya, a nearby farming community within his constituency.

Challenge

According to him, the community and its environs usually face a huge challenge transporting sick people to the health centre.

Dr Yakubu added that the motorbikes were meant to help the health workers attend to patients in the remote parts of the constituency.

The Mion MP also donated 1000 plastic chairs to the community and other agricultural inputs which included fertilisers, pesticides, insecticides and wellington boots to support farming in the area, as well as sets of jerseys and 100 footballs to support sports in the constituency.

The acting Director of the Sang Community Hospital, Mr Nassam Sulemana Ahmed, thanked the MP and pledged that management would put a maintenance schedule in place to prolong the lifespan of the motorbikes.
