The nine, comprising seven males and two females, will join the 17 incumbent members of parliament, who have also won their seats in the just ended December 7 general election.

The debutants were elected on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with the exception of Mr Michael Gyato who won the Krachi East seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Those on NDC ticket include, Charles Agbeve for Agotime-Ziope, Angela Alorwu-Tay for Afadjato South, Abdul Aziz Amuniru of Akan and Alexander Hottordze for Central Tongu Constituency.

The rest are Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor of South Dayi, Kwadwo Nyanpon Aboagye for Biakoye, Joycelyn Tetteh of North Dayi and Geoffrey Kini for the Nkwanta South Constituency.

Bitter victory

Meanwhile, the outcome of the presidential elections, which saw the NPP's Nana Akufo-Addo dethroning President John Mahama as the President-elect, has robbed most NDC MPs in the region of their victory celebrations.

Two of the newly elected MPs told the Daily Graphic, they could not celebrate their victory to Parliament when the Mahama-led NDC government  is on its way out of power.

An emotional Angela Alorwu-Tay, MP-elect for the Afadjato-South Constituency, said “it was difficult for me to celebrate my victory, knowing well that my President, who appointed me as DCE, has lost the election and I am going to Parliament as a minority MP.”

For her counterpart, MP-elect for Agotime-Ziope, Charles Agbeve, the defeat of President Mahama in the elections was a bitter event, considering the track record of his government in terms of development in the last four years.

“I still wonder how this happened to our President because this is one President who has delivered development projects to every part of the country, and it was on his track record that some of us campaigned to Parliament,” he stated.

This notwithstanding, the soon-to-be legislators said they were ready to perform their roles in the law-making chamber as they intended to lobby in order to get key projects delivered to their constituents under the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government.
