NPP targets 3 seats in Volta Region but NDC says it’s a dream

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is targeting three parliamentary seats in the Volta Region to necessitate victory for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the upcoming election.

“Agenda 3-30 is on course and we are going to shock the NDC, come 2016,” the NPP regional secretary, Mr Joseph Homenya, said without mentioning the specific constituencies they had targeted.

But the Volta Regional Director of Communications for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kafui Agbleze, described such dream as unrealistic and overambitious target by the opposition NPP.

in a press statement signed by the NDC’s Regional Communications Director, the party said “this is an impossible miracle attainable only in dreams and not in the Volta Region,” he stated.

Show appreciation

The Volta Regional NPP executives at a recent press conference in Ho to show appreciation to the chiefs and people of the region for what they said was an exceptional reception accorded their flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, during a four-day tour of the region, hinted that the party was targeting up to 30 per cent of votes in the region as well as three parliamentary seats.

Speaking at the press conference, the secretary said the NPP would shock the NDC, as already Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent visit in the region had brought discomfort to them.

The agenda 3-30 is targeted at winning three seats and 30 per cent of the valid votes to be cast in the election and according to Mr Homenya, it was an achievable target as the youth in the region had bought into the NPP’s  message.

NPP’s appreciation to Voltarians

The Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr Peter Amenu, expressing appreciation on behalf of the NPP regional leadership and Nana Akufo-Addo to the chiefs and the people of the Volta Region, stated that “this is not the first time Nana Akufo-Addo had been in the region campaigning but the welcome accorded him this time around was truly wonderful.”

Mr Amewu described as unprecedented the crowd that welcomed the NPP flag bearer to the region and said the Volta Region was returning to the path of progress and prosperity because it was aware that the choices they would make this year would have consequences on their future, knowing how the NDC had failed them.

“The reception from the people showed that their choice of who becomes the President would be devoid of tribal and ethnic considerations. They will vote for a leader who will improve their lives and bring them jobs.

“It is, therefore, not surprising that our political opponents, shocked by the warm reception, are as usual seeking to down-play the effect of the visit,” he added.

Nothing to fear in Nana Addo

The Volta Region, he said, had nothing to fear in Nana Akufo-Addo because the NPP’s plan for development of the country would encompass all parts of Ghana, without  discrimination.

He reiterated a promise made to the people of Ketu South and Ketu North by the NPP to declare the two municipalities industrial zones, adding that “as pledged by Nana Akufo-Addo in Keta, a mini-harbour will be constructed to serve the needs of fishermen.”

With the development plans for the region, Mr Amewu was optimistic that the performance of the party would be an improvement on past elections.

“The Volta Region will shock NDC; enough is enough, we are voting for the NPP this year,’ he added.

Police brutality

The regional chairman also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to expedite action on investigation involving police brutality on him by a police patrol team led by Supt. Theodore Holormey and other officials in the Akatsi South constituency in the just-ended limited registration exercise.

NPP can’t win 30% votes in Volta – NDC

“The claim by the NPP that they will achieve 30% of votes cast in the upcoming election is highly ambitious, unrealistic and not achievable. In 2008, the NPP had 15.38% of votes from the region and in 2012 the vote of the NPP dropped significantly to 12.9%. How on earth will they achieve 30%,”   Mr Kafui Agbleze asked.

He said that the massive projects carried out by the NDC in the region and the leadership skills exhibited by President John Dramani Mahama would be among the several issues voters would consider in determining who deserves their thumb.

“Nana Addo has shown bad leadership within his own party making some members of his party not to have confidence in him; how much more the general public.

“The performance of the NPP in the Volta Region will rather reduce to 10% because of the significant level of development taking place under President Mahama,” he stated.
