How the Akwatia by-election went

The voting process in the Akwatia by-election ended peacefully in most polling stations at 5pm.

This was after a generally peaceful process of the election which is to find a replacement Member of Parliament for the people of the area after their representative Ernest Kumi, passed on after an illness.

From the Boadua Lorry Station centre, Graphic Online's Haruna Wunpini reported that sorted and counting of ballots commenced immediately after the voting process closed at 5pm.

Voting 

Voting commenced peacefully at all polling stations in the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region in the morning (September 2, 2025).

As of 8:30am, visits to the Akyem Tarkorawse R/C Polling station, Town Mosque Polling station, Durbar grounds, Methodist Primary, SDA Basic School, NYOC, Presbyterian Primary School, Funeral Grounds and the Tokrowase Senior High School showed that the process is peaceful.

All 119 polling stations are under the command of senior police officers with support from other junior officers.

Meanwhile, the Police Administration has put Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCOPs) and Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) in charge of all the Electoral Areas in the constituency to enhance the peace and security of the process.

Graphic Online's Haruna Yussif Wunpini reports that as of 8:50 am voters were in queues at all 119 polling stations across Akwatia constituency.

Three candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) are contesting.

A total of 52,328 voters are on the register.

The Akwatia seat has been a swing seat for both NDC and NPP.

At the Beauty of Nature polling station at Boadua, the Presiding Officer of the Electoral Commission (EC), Matilda Anakwah told Graphic Online that a total of 537 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots at the station. 

Thirteen police officers in uniform and and mofty were seen at the station.

At the Boadua Bus Terminal there weren't many voters in the queue as of 8am.

The Presiding Officer in charge of the polling station, Obeng Mark Akrofi said a total of 612 registered voters were expected to cast their ballots.

Esi Baisiwaa, who was first to cast her ballot told Graphic Online encouraged other voters to quickly go out and vote to enable their respective candidates win.
