Wa Youth group wants Akufo-Addo to resolve crisis

A group of concerned youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Wa has called on the party's flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to call factions to order in the wake of the recent turmoil within the party.

According to the group ,“ If Ghanaians must see Nana Akufo Addo as a peacemaker, then he has to be seen making peace within the party he leads.  The NPP,  needs him to do that now.”

At a news conference in Wa on Wednesday, the group said "Nana Addo must stretch his humble arms to work in harmony with the national executive, especially the national chairman, Paul Afoko, and the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong."

The news conference, they said, was occasioned by recent events in the party, especially the killing of the Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, last week, and the subsequent attempted coup to oust the party's national chairman and general secretary.

Accusing fingers

The group has stated that the accusing fingers some people who call themselves party sympathisers are pointing to Afoko and Agyepong are unnecessary because there is no evidence pointing to the fact that they are responsible for the internal wranglings.

“They are simply the detractors of the party that we must pray should grow up in politics.

"What is the use of the national council of the party? What has the flag bearer, who is highly respected, done to bring peace and tranquillity into the party?" the spokesman for the group, Ahmed Sadat, asked at the news conference.

Vote of no confidence

The group called the reason for the attempted coup to pass a vote of no confidence on Mr Afoko and Mr Agyepong "unconstitutional, illegal, bogus, ill-conceived, premature, pointless and baseless", and insisted that "we will not sit down and allow this syndrome of behaving to satisfy an individual as if our birth rights are for sale."

The group, parading 44 members, including the Wa Central Constituency Chairman of the party, Mr Ali Karim Kamara, at the news conference, had displayed in the background an old banner advertising Mr Agyepong during his campaign for general secretaryship last year.
