We want Kwabena Agyapong back — Volta NPP Youth

The Volta Youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has joined calls for the suspended General Secretary, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, to be reinstated in the greater interest of unity and cohesiveness of the party.

They have, therefore, appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene to bring to finality the matter of his continued suspension.

Speaking at a press conference in Ho, the spokesperson for the group made up of some NPP executive members and sympathisers, Mr Ronald Kaykay Fiakui, said it was on record that the leadership of the party had indicated that Mr Agyapong would be reinstated six months after the general election, but ‘10 months have passed and nothing has been done’.

He noted that the longer his suspension continued, the more it portrayed a deliberate intention to subvert the will of the delegates who voted massively for him at the Tamale congress.

Is it removal or suspension?

The leadership of the party, Mr Fiakui said, should come clear and explain to party members whether the original intention was to remove or suspend him for article 10 of the party’s constitution to apply.

“As it stands now, it appears the party’s constitution is being flagrantly abused and violated,” he stated.

Mr Agyapong, the spokesperson noted, had since his suspension conducted himself well, attracting commendation across the rank and file of the party.

“The grassroot of the party are getting increasingly agitated that a legitimate decision of the party congress, the highest decision-making body of the party is being withered,” he indicated.

Talking about the credentials of Mr Agyapong, the spokesperson described him as a tactful person who smoothly managed and supervised the two-stage presidential primary and parliamentary contests across the country that contributed immensely to the historic victory by majority of members of Parliament of the party.

“Moreover, Mr Agyapong made good his campaign pledge to strengthen the party at the base by ensuring that for the first time in our party’s history, constituency accounts were credited directly with funds from the party’s headquarters,” he said.

‘The Volta Region benefitted most, especially in the constituencies where we traditionally struggled to get candidates to stand, and this perhaps contributed to the improved performance of the NPP in the region,’ he noted.

National executive response

Condemning certain ‘unfortunate remarks and regrettable responses’ from some national executive members who are against the call for Mr Agyapong to be reinstated, Mr Fiakui said it was obvious that those who were directly benefitting from the suspension had become the most vociferous against his reinstatement.
