When some lecturers from University of Ghana led a street campaign for Mahama

Some lecturers at the University of Ghana campus on Tuesday embarked on a political campaign on the streets of Okplongo in Accra, as a public show of support for John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress for Election 2024.

Normally associated with the quiet corridors of academia, the lecturers stepped out and distributed fliers to drivers and passengers at the Okponglo traffic light in a bid to convince them to vote for John Dramani Mahama as president..

Speaking to the media, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, head of the Physics Department at the University of Ghana said the group was determined to leave "no stone unturned" in their effort to secure victory for the NDC.

”We are going to hold house-to-house campaigns. We just began. We shall continue as December 7 approaches. This is the first time such a street campaign has been organised by lecturers, which shows the wind of change blowing now across the nation. Everybody is involved, and we pray this wind would bring the change we want to see," she stated.

The lecturers also took the opportunity to criticise some aspects of the current policies, particularly the Free SHS programme.

Professor Martin Oteng-Ababio, a senior lecturer with the Geography department at the University of Ghana said the current form of the Free SHS policy is just not sustainable.

In his view, although access has increased because of the programme, this has come at the expense of quality.

He called for an in-depth review of the policy, proposing instead that they need to focus on strengthening the technical and vocational aspects of education.
