Jurgen Klopp insists he never planned to call himself “the normal one” during his first press conference as Liverpool boss.

The German replaced Brendan Rodgers as manager last week, and subsequently gave his first media briefing prior to the international break.

Klopp gave himself the moniker when questioned about Jose Mourinho’s maiden press conference in England – he labelled himself “the special one” – but he has now revealed that it was unplanned.

"I was relieved after the press conference," he told Bild. "I have talked a lot of nonsense in my life – but not in English!

"I had not planned [the 'Normal One' quip]. I was asked and it came out. Sometimes it's better to hold your mouth!

"I have not read a newspaper since the press conference, but I've heard they're already making t-shirts [with my words]."

Klopp's first game in charge of Liverpool comes this weekend, with the Reds set to take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
