Gyan, Dede, others out of Canada match

Coach Avram Grant has been forced to lead a limping Black Stars side into Tuesday’s international friendly against Canada in Washington.

As of press time yesterday, it was clear that Grant was going to miss the services of his reliable captain Asamoah Gyan and and his vice Andre Dede Ayew, as well as Christian Atsu, Rabiu Mohammed and Abdul-Majeed Waris, all through injury.

Samuel Osei Kuffour who is expected to take charge of affairs of Kumasi Asante Kotoko today is assured of a good start financially as the club awaits its share of the transfer fees of ex-Kotoko defender, Baba Rahman, to Chelsea which is in the region of GH¢250,000.

The high-profile transfer of the gifted Black Stars left-back to Cheslea in a five-year deal fetched his German Bundesliga side, Augsburg, 14 million pounds (30 million euros). Kotoko, who gave the player the needed exposure three years ago, are expected to receive over 57,000 euros as training compensation and solidarity contribution, courtesy FIFA’s International Transfer Matching System (ITMS).

Princesses plot Equatorial Guinea fall

Ghana’s Under-20 female football team, Black Princesses, are poised to cruise to the next round of the 2016 Women’s World Cup qualifiers as they host Equatorial Guinea in the second leg match in Kumasi on Sunday.

Meeting for the second successive time in a similar qualifier, the Princesses know their guests will come into the game slated for the Baba Yara Stadium with a lot of fire, hopeful of avenging the loss they suffered in the last qualifier.

Gyan to miss Stars’ friendly

Sam Addo, manager of Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, has confirmed that the striker will not feature in the Ghana-Canada friendly match to be staged at the RFK Stadium, Washington DC, USA on October 13.

 The Shanghai SIPG star suffered an injury during a match against Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese-Super League and he is recovering.

Bank of Africa supports Celebrity Golf Club

Bank of Africa last Saturday demonstrated its commitment to the development of sports by donating an amount of GH¢22,500 to the Celebrity Golf Club at Sakumono, Tema.

The donation was made for the reconstruction of Tee-boxes (nine holes) at the club’s facility during the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Invitational Tournament.

Mr Komiete confident of victory

The chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association (GARFA), Nii Komiete Doku, says he expects to be retained for the next four years after achieving a lot for the sport in the region.

Nii Doku, who took office after the demise of the late Jordan Angblah in 2012, is being challenged by Eugene Jacquaye in their upcoming RFA elections on Monday.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the incumbent said "I expect my people to retain me in office after acheiving a lot for the region".

Golf chief to focus on youth development

The newly elected president of the Ghana Golf Association (GGA), Mike Aggrey, has promised to focus on the development of youth golf during his three-year tenure.

Mr Aggrey who was elected at the association’s  Annual General Meeting held last month at the Ghana Open held at the Achimota Golf Club said he has set an ambitious target of adding 150 new golfers to the existing number of golfers in the country.

Mr Aggrey served as the vice president to immediate past GGA president, Dr Felix Frempong, and   says he believes that the introduction of youthful members, as well as differential pricing of membership fees for young golfers will make the sport more affordable for young golfers.

The annual Adisadel-Mfantsipim Fun Day Games will take place on Saturday, October 24, at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.

This year’s edition, which is the 15th year since the introduction of the game, has been dedicated to the Methodist and Anglican churches in Ghana and founders of Mfantsipim School and Adisadel College.

It is on the theme ‘Celebrating the Methodist and Anglican Churches’ educational vision’.

Old boys and girls from Mfantsipim, Adisadel, Wesley Girls High School, Holy Child, Mfantsiman and St. Monica’s, together with family and friends, will converge at the El-Wak Stadium to rekindle friendships, reminisce their school days, exercise and have fun, while raising funds to support their alma mater.

Federations demand equal treatment for all sports

The heads of sports disciplines, with the notable exception of football, have demanded equal treatment from the state for athletes participating in the other sports.

The group of federation heads stated that athletes who participated in sporting disciplines such as hockey, weightlifting, taekwondo, boxing, among other disciplines were not second-class citizens and, therefore, the preferential treatment football enjoyed had the potential to kill the other sports.

Addressing a press conference in Accra yesterday, the spokesperson for the federation presidents, Mr Nestor Galley, called for an equal and level playing field for all athletes irrespective of their discipline.

Princesses host Eq. Guinea in Kumasi

Ghana’s Under-20 female football team, the Black Princesses, will host Equatorial Guinea in the second leg of the second round qualifier of the 2016 FIFA Women's World Cup (WWC).

The match will be played at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday as the Accra Sports Stadium, which was originally named as the match venue, has been temporarily closed down for work on the pitch.

Keep fit clubs boycott Interfaith games

The Christian Council of Ghana's call to use sports as a medium to achieve a peaceful co-existence between religious faiths in Ghana appeared to have fallen on deaf ears as only one out of the 50 invited keep fit clubs showed up for last Saturday's abortive Interfaith Games at the El-Wak Stadium. 

The multi-sport event was part of a week-long celebration dubbed ‘National Interfaith Harmony Week’, but as at 9a.m. only the host club, El-Wak Keep Fit Club, had turned up alongside a few dejected officials of the council who were perched morosely on seats at the venue. 

Concerned about the poor turnout, the Director of Finance and Administration of the council, Oheneba-Kofi Ntiamoah, had hinted the Daily Graphic that the event would be called off if, at least, 10 keep fit clubs did not turn up.

His expectation was not met and the organisers were left with no oher choice than to call off the event at 10a.m.

Otumfuo to outdoor Kuffour Friday

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will officially thank the outgoing management and board of Kumasi Asante Kotoko at convocation at the Manhyia Palace on Friday.

Otumfuo is also expected to officially communicate to the outgoing team about the takeover of the club by former Black Stars international, Samuel Osei Kuffour.

Both the Kotoko management and Manhyia sources have confirmed Friday’s farewell meeting in Kumasi to the Daily Graphic.

Dede Ayew, Schlupp on target

Andre Dede Ayew got back to his scoring ways for Swansea as he scored the opener for the Swans but were held to a 2-2 draw at home by visiting Tottenham Hotspurs.

A Harry Keane own goal put the Swans in a comfortable 2-0 lead but a brace from Christian Eriksen helped Spurs to grab a point.
