Akonnor makes waves in Kenya

Gor Mahia Head Coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has said he feels deeply honoured after being voted Coach of the Month in the Kenyan Premier League last weekend.

The 51-year-old former Black Stars coach has steered the Kenyan giants to the summit of the league table, maintaining a 100 per cent record so far in their campaign.

Speaking to Graphic Sports yesterday, Akonnor admitted that the recognition came much earlier than he expected, adding that it served as motivation for him to push even harder.

“I honestly did not expect this achievement to come this soon,” he said. “But it is an opportunity for me to work harder than before.”

He expressed gratitude to the club’s management for their unwavering support, crediting them with creating the conditions that have allowed the team to thrive.

“We’ve had tremendous support from management—the things we wanted to do, the approach and everything we requested for,” he noted, adding, “Once we have that support, the mission is halfway done.”

Akonnor said he was excited not only about his personal recognition but also about the team’s current league position.

“I’m very happy we are on top of the league now and also happy to be named ‘Coach of the Month’ for October. It’s an opportunity for us to work hard and see the hope for the future.”

He revealed that many things had taken place behind the scenes to reach this level of success, praising the technical team, management, playing body and the fans for their collective effort.

The former Ghana captain also attributed his success to divine favour.

“I believe the grace and favour of God has been upon me, and that has enabled me to chalk this success,” he added.
