Ashaiman thanks Bawumia as work begins on its first astroturf
Community leaders and residents of Ashaiman have expressed their gratitude to Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for facilitating the construction of the community’s first astroturf.
The project, which is transforming the Ashaiman Roman Catholic Park into a modern football facility, commenced on Saturday with a sod-cutting ceremony attended by traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and youth representatives.

The initiative follows a direct appeal made by a group of young footballers from Ashaiman during a courtesy call on Dr. Bawumia after their victory in this year’s Ramadan Cup football tournament.
While presenting a cash reward to the team, the Vice President was informed by the Zongo Chief of Ashaiman about the absence of an astroturf in the football-loving community.
"Dr Bawumia expressed surprise when he heard Ashaiman did not have an astroturf and pledged to get one built for them once they secure a place for it," recounted the Zongo Chief.
The community subsequently allocated the Roman Catholic School land for the project, and construction is now underway, with completion expected within six months.
Gratitude from community leaders
At the sod-cutting ceremony, various stakeholders expressed appreciation to Dr Bawumia for fulfilling his promise.
The Queenmother of Ashaiman, representing the traditional council, stated, "It's long overdue and other communities have had their share. We are happy that we are also getting our share, and we thank Dr Bawumia."

"The youth is excited about this project, and we are grateful for the development taking place in our community," he said.

The Presidential Coordinator for Zongo Development, Alhaji Ben Abdallah Banda, highlighted Dr Bawumia’s dedication to expanding access to modern football facilities.
