Ashgold unsure of Confederation Cup participation

Obuasi-based Ashgold are yet to confirm their participation in next year’s CAF Confederation Cup competition after media reports suggested that financial constraints had ruled them out.

Refuting the story yesterday, Ashgold CEO, Kudjoe Fianoo, told the Graphic Sports that no firm decision had been taken on the club’s participation yet.

He, however, confirmed ongoing negotiations with the club’s stakeholders, hoping to arrive at a decision by the close of today.

Inter Allies won the Confederation Cup slot after emerging as runners-up to Kumasi Asante Kotoko in last season’s MTN FA Cup but were unable to dig deep into their pocket to foot the associated bills in participating in the continental showpiece.

Unfortunately, the Obuasi-based side accepted the challenge to bail them out but reports suggest they have been forced to pull out, with officials citing financial challenges as the bane of their ambition.

In the past, some Ghanaian clubs’ failure to participate in continental competitions on financial grounds incurred the wrath of CAF which slashed the nation’s slots.

It is now not clear what sanctions the country could attract from CAF if the GFA fails to submit any club for the competition.
