The popular boxing event, which is being put together to celebrate the life and achievements of Africa’s all-time greatest boxer, Azumah Nelson, coincides with his 65th birthday on July 19 and will showcase many great fights on the night.

Azumah Nelson Boxing Promotions, the organisers of the event, have announced that the 65th birthday celebration of this legendary figure will also serve as the launch of the Azumah Youth Boxing Championship, which aims to provide a platform for young and emerging fighters in the country to showcase their skills and nurture their talent.

Azumah, a member of the exclusive International Boxing Hall of Fame, has world titles in two weight classes during his illustrious career.

He won the World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight title in 1984 and defended it for three years before moving up in weight.

A product of the famous Akotoku Boxing Academy, Azumah became arguably Africa’s best-ever pugilist when he held the WBC super-featherweight belt twice between 1988 and 1997.

Following his retirement in 2008, Azumah initiated a fight night series in the country, which has already produced remarkable talents such as Ghana-based Nigerian boxer Joshua Oluwaseun Wahab, who clinched the WBO Africa super featherweight title in 2021.
