Bankers Football League: Title race tightens as UMB grind out vital win

The Bankers Football League title race took another dramatic turn this weekend, with leaders UMB showcasing their championship mettle by grinding out a narrow 1-0 victory over CAL BANK in Week 8 action last Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas Park.

The win solidifies their position at the summit with 22 points, but the chasing pack refused to let them pull away.

The weekend's most emphatic result came from OMNIBSIC, who delivered a statement performance with a resounding 3-0 thrashing of REPUBLIC BANK. This victory, combined with other results, sees them leap into fifth place, firmly announcing themselves as dark horse contenders.

In a crucial match at the top, second-placed GCB kept the pressure on UMB with a hard-fought 1-0 win over NIB.

The result sees GCB maintain their position on 19 points, while NIB, despite possessing a formidable goal difference of +13, remain in fourth. ABSA continued their impressive form, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory against BOG, solidifying their hold on third place with 18 points.

Further down the table, STANBIC BANK edged GTCO 1-0, ECOBANK secured a comfortable 2-0 win over FIRST BANK, and CBG continued UBA’s miserable season with a 1-0 defeat that leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table. The match between ZENITH BANK and SOCIETE GENERALE ended in a stalemate, a 0-0 draw that did little to help either side's mid-table ambitions.

The updated league table paints a picture of a fiercely competitive division. UMB leads with 22 points, but GCB (19) and ABSA (18) are in close pursuit. At the other end, the struggle is intensifying for FIRST BANK (4 points) and UBA (2 points), who are rapidly becoming detached from the rest of the pack. With the season reaching its midway point, every match promises high stakes and drama.
