Best of Bukom 3 at LaBoma: Beachfront boxing spectacle opens with free health drive
Ghana’s storied boxing tradition is set for a bold reinvention on May 8 as the nation’s finest fighters trade the familiar confines of the ring for the open sands of LaBoma Beach in La, headlining a high-octane showcase dubbed Best of Bukom 3.
In a striking fusion of sport and spectacle, organisers Bishop Boxing Promotions are transforming the shoreline into a fight arena, where crashing waves and ocean breeze will frame a stacked card featuring Bukom’s established names and its next generation of rising contenders.
The concept is deliberate and loaded with intent. Bukom, widely regarded as the heartbeat of Ghanaian boxing, has long been a conveyor belt of champions.
Now, its legacy is being repackaged into a lifestyle-driven sporting experience aimed at widening boxing’s appeal beyond purists to a broader, festival-style audience.
“The idea is simple, come for the boxing, stay for the atmosphere,” a representative of Bishop Boxing told the Graphic Sports, signalling a clear ambition to elevate the event into a must-attend cultural spectacle.
With thousands expected to descend on LaBoma, anticipation is already building across the coastal enclave. Vendors, food sellers and hospitality operators are bracing for a surge in activity, underlining the event’s potential to inject meaningful economic energy into the local community.
Yet beyond the carnival atmosphere, the action inside the ropes promises serious business.
Topping the bill is an explosive super welterweight showdown between undefeated Henry Malm and long-time rival Sampson Segbedzi, a grudge clash brimming with narrative and stakes, where victory could prove career-defining for either man.
Adding international intrigue, former WBO Africa and Global champion Wasiru “Gyata Bi” Mohammed steps into a 10-round super featherweight contest against Nigeria’s Yusuf Mohammed Olalekan, while Ghana’s super welterweight champion Musah Rahman Lawson puts his national title on the line against the dangerous Kofi Dana.
Elsewhere, rising star Majid Yakubu makes his first appearance under the Bishop Management banner against seasoned Beninois campaigner Ghislain Vodounhessi, and the unbeaten Emmanuel Mawuli risks his flawless record against hard-hitting Moses Adjei Selvi.
However, Best of Bukom 3 is being pitched as more than just a fight night.
Organisers have woven community outreach and youth-focused initiatives into the fabric of the event, positioning boxing as a tool for discipline, opportunity and social development. For residents, it represents more than entertainment — it is a powerful expression of identity, pride and cultural unity, with boxing as its binding force.
Fight week itself opens on a socially conscious note, with a free community health screening exercise scheduled for Sunday, May 3, in Osu. The initiative will offer blood pressure checks, diabetes risk testing and general wellness assessments, reinforcing the event’s commitment to public health.
In a further show of long-term intent, Bishop Boxing Promotions has unveiled the Bishop Boxing Care Act, guaranteeing every fighter on its cards a year of complimentary health insurance, a significant welfare intervention in a sport often defined by risk.
Additionally, the Coaches Top-Off Fund has been introduced to provide monthly financial support and essential supplies to trainers working across Ghana’s boxing gyms.
“By enhancing coaching resources and training environments, the programme helps coaches nurture, guide, and retain young athletes, promoting their sporting development, personal growth, and positive community impact,” said Dave Bishop, CEO and President of Bishop Boxing Promotions.
