Bishop Promotions signs Abubakari, Yakubu to management deals

Two of Ghana’s most exciting boxing prospects, reigning WBO Africa junior welterweight champion Faisal “Poncho Power” Abubakari and rising southpaw Majid Yakubu, have received a major career lift after signing three-year management deals with Bishop Boxing Promotions, owned by Ghanaian-American Dave Bishop.

The agreement brings both fighters under the Bishop Sports Alliance Management Group, making them the first Ghanaian boxers to be enrolled under the banner with immediate effect.

Abubakari, 33, currently ranked No.15 in the world, arrives as a proven champion, while 23-year-old Yakubu is still at an early stage of his professional career, with just five fights, but has already caught the eye with his raw talent and fearless approach.

Both boxers are expected to begin this new chapter on Bishop Promotions’ next fight card, scheduled for Easter weekend on April 3, aptly titled “The Resurrection.”

According to Mr Bishop, the signings align perfectly with his outfit’s long-term vision of nurturing elite fighters and positioning them for global success through athlete-first leadership and international access.

He stressed that bringing together an established champion and a young prospect underlines the syndicate’s broader mission of creating pathways for Ghanaian talent, regardless of age, background or origin, while striking a balance between excellence in the present and hope for the future.

“Signing Faisal Abubakari is more than adding a champion to our roster. It’s a promise to our communities that talent, perseverance and heart will be given the platform they deserve,” said Mr Bishop, CEO/President of the fast-rising promotional firm.

“Together, we’ll elevate his legacy and inspire a new generation to believe that greatness can come from anywhere.”

Bishop Boxing Promotions burst onto the Ghanaian boxing scene last August with the launch of the 'Best of Bukom' franchise at the Bukom Boxing Arena, providing a competitive platform for young fighters, rising prospects and established champions.

The momentum continued with an even more electrifying 'Best of Bukom 2' last month, with Yakubu among the boxers who impressed on the night, despite narrowly losing his national championship bout against Joseph Commey.

Beyond the ring, Bishop Promotions has rolled out ambitious projects, including plans for a boxing academy, the Ghana Boxing App and the upcoming Ghana Boxing Choice Awards slated for July.
