Black Satellites to face DR Congo in AFCON opener

Ghana’s national under-20 team, the Black Satellites, will begin their campaign in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against DR Congo on Friday, May 2, as they look to reclaim continental glory.

Coach Desmond Ofei’s side has been drawn in a new-look Group C alongside Senegal, Central African Republic, and DR Congo, following a reshuffle prompted by the withdrawal of host nation Côte d'Ivoire.

The re-draw was held last week, reshaping the initial groups and setting the stage for a highly competitive tournament.
Ghana, four-time champions at this level, will go into their opening match as favourites based on pedigree and recent form.

However, Coach Ofei has cautioned against underestimating DR Congo, a side not traditionally seen as a youth powerhouse but capable of springing surprises.

“We respect every opponent, and DR Congo will come into this match determined to make their mark. But we are equally prepared and focused on sending a strong message to the rest of the group,” Coach Ofei stated ahead of the tie.

The Black Satellites were initially placed in Group A with Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic, but the exit of the former hosts forced tournament organisers to revise the groupings.

Ghana’s last triumph in the U-20 AFCON came in 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their chance to compete at the corresponding FIFA U-20 World Cup.

This time, with a World Cup slot also up for grabs, the team is more determined than ever to reach the final and earn another shot on the global stage.

“We have a rich history in this competition, and the boys are motivated not just by the title but by the opportunity to represent Africa at the World Cup,” said a source from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
