Boxing league to return as ‘Bukom Fist of Fury’

The boxing league is set to return to Accra after a nine-year break in the form of "Bukom Fist of Fury", according to Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, the former chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority.

He said the league is expected to commence between August or September and would be a three-phase competition involving juvenile boxing, amateur boxing and professional boxing to be staged at the bukom Boxing Arena.

In an interview with GNA Sports, Mr Foh Amoaning-revealed that difficulties in acquiring sponsorship prevented the GBA from announcing the league’s return months ago.

He revealed that the GBA had managed to secure sponsorship from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to run the competition.

Explaining the format of the competition, the former GBA boss who was instrumental in establishing the novelty Mortein Professional Boxing League in 2003, said there would be two rounds a season, with each round lasting for 13 weeks. “It would be [held] twice every month, so the first round will take 13 weeks, then the last also takes 13 weeks”.

“In total we can get about 20 teams competing in the league. We are looking to get at least 12 to 14 teams in Accra, because there are many boxing gyms in the Greater Accra Region than other regions. Then we are also looking at zones for the other regions. Four zones made up of regions, whilst some of the regions will be zoned together.

“Let’s say Upper East and Upper West regions in one zone, then Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions in another zone, then Central and Western regions in another zone, before Eastern and Volta regions in another zone. So there would be four zones, then we look for two teams that would join from the security agencies, because they also have boxers,” he said.

He said the boxing authority would have registered participating clubs and the number of many fighters each gym would be bringing. — GNA
