Can Bagerbaseh retain MacDan title?

The Accra Stadium will today host the final of the second edition of the McDan Tennis Open Championships when defending champion, Jeff Bagerbaseh, attempts a second consecutive title.

Last year’s finalists, Bagerbaseh and George Darko both qualified for yesterday’s semi-finals, signalling an encore this time around.

The five-day tennis fiesta has witnessed over 100 participants in both male and female divisions with Darko keen on seeking revenge against top seed Bagerbaseh.

In the build-up to the quarter-finals, Bagerbaseh defeated Isaac Bamfo 6-1, 6-0 at the preliminary stage with Eric Tetteh Nartey beating Patrick Tenkorang 6-1, 6-2 and Daniel Anum Quartey eliminating Bismark Dowuona 6-2, 6-2.

Charles Asomani also defeated Reginald Okantey 6-3, 6-1, with Stephen Nortey losing 6-3, 6-4 to Kwabena Ofosu Bamfo, while Benjamin Fumi and Francis Akpese won their games against Nakavi Alisi and Andrews Appiah 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 7-5 respectively.

In the women’s final, Francisca Nyarko will also try to defend her title by beating off stiff opposition from some tough contenders.

The winners of each category will take home GH¢ 1,000 and a trophy, with the best four players of the tournament travelling to Spain for a training tour being sponsored and facilitated by McDan Shipping Company Limited, the headline sponsor.
