Champion Bowl tennis ends

A three-day Junior Tennis competition has ended at the National Sports College at Winneba with a call for more competitions to unearth fresh talents for the nation.

The competition, organised by Zion Management Africa Limited (ZMAL), targeted children between the ages of nine and 16 years in a bid to revive the sport and also select young talents to represent the nation at the Champion Bowl World Championship from October 18 to 25.

It drew participants from Ashaiman, Ho, Obuasi, Cape Coast, Sunyani and the host town, Winneba. In all, about 50 children participated in the singles Under-9, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 boys and girls categories.

Winners, runners-up and semi-finalists were presented with trophies and souvenirs from sponsors.

The CEO of ZMAL, Mr David Derhnick-Coffie, in a speech said: “Tennis, like other sports in the country, has the strength of uniting people from different backgrounds and it is for this reason that we seek to use the Champion Bowl Tennis Tournaments to restore juvenile tennis in Ghana”.

Mr Erasmus Adorkor, Director of the National Sports College, thanked the organisers for the initiative, saying that the country has very talented young tennis players, hence the need for more of such competitions to unearth them.

He took the opportunity to appeal to corporate Ghana to help tennis by providing support for such organisations when they come knocking on their doors.

The event was sponsored by Indomie, who fed the participants and officials with noodles and provided boxes of Indomie, as well as exercise books for winners and participants.
