Faisal through to Round of 8

Abrankese-based King Faisal yesterday progressed to the quarter-finals stage of the ongoing MTN FA Cup when they pipped Tamale-based Steadfast FC 1-0 at the Dr Kwame Kyei’s Sports Complex.

It was the first win of Faisal at their new home since switching to their new home ground.

The only goal of the match came in the 88th minute through substitute Abdul Latif who headed home a pass into the penalty area to beat the goalie for Steadfast, Tahiru Abubakari.

The goal was the only bright spot of the day, which was described as unimpressive by the few football fans who converged on the stadium.

It was an uninspiring match that saw both teams doing very little to impress the fans.

In the first half, Steadfast FC laid back and allowed Faisal to dictate the pace of the game until the 35th minute when they started attacking from the flanks but posed no threat to Faisal.

The second half resumed with the Coach for Faisal, Godwin Ablordey, making three substitutions.

The fresh legs injected some urgency into the game with both teams increasing the pace and mounting pressure on each other’s defence.

It was during one of those offensive encounters that saw Latif heading a cross to beat Abubakari to qualify Faisal for the next stage of the competition.
